Faith, Hope, Boots...

When Paul Keppel learns that his fanatical, fire-and-brimstone-preaching grandfather is dying from brain cancer, he sees his own chronic headaches as a sign from above that he too has a very short time to live. Driven by pain, a nightmare about work boots, and a sense of impending doom, Paul soon finds himself losing control over his words and actions, to disastrous and comical effect. In order to save his marriage, avenge his sister, and preserve his sanity, he must face the memory of the summer when he was twenty-one, when a tragic steel plant accident sent his life spinning off course. But in the process, Paul begins to suspect that the history he has written in his head may not be as accurate as he once believed.

I bought A History of Stone and Steel to use as my "trip book" when recently traveling from Phoenix to D.C. and back. Within one paragraph, I wouldn't let anyone talk to me, interrupt my reading, or ask me to put my book down other than to buckle up or change planes. Christopher Fisher mesmerized me with his smart and sassy writing. I now know about working in the skin-searing heat of a steel mill. I also know the purpose of work boots. I related to the vagaries of marriage, and I celebrated the coming together of torn-apart families. In my opinion, A History of Stone and Steel is a work of genius! This may be a debut novel, but its author seems to have enthralled people like me for centuries.

I really enjoyed this book! It is told by the same character but in 2 different points of his life And through a dream sequence. Very good, very different then a lot of stuff out there. You won't regret reading this book. There were a lot of religious references, I am not at all religious, but they seemed natural to the setting of the book and weren't overwhelming.
This novel is entertaining, thought-provoking, funny and tragic, striking a nice balance at the right times. It navigates the protagonist seamlessly through past and present, navigating fear, regret, anger and miscellaneous messiness of life, violent tempers and all, contemplating mortality and God on top of it all. This isn't only a great first novel. This is a great novel, period.
During the 1998 tornado in St. Peter, Minnesota, they sealed up Shopko where I was stuck in the book aisle so I picked up Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone and started reading and after the tornado passed and they let people out, I stayed sitting there, rapt, and eventually stood up and bought the book. The only other time I've ever felt like that about a book is A History of Stone and Steel. Chris Fisher is a powerful storyteller. You will feel his grip. The passages about headaches are nauseating, and I mean that in the best possible way.
I don't know what I expected when I got this book. I certainly didn't expect that it would be set in the part of the country where I grew up, and consequently the sense of familiarity I experienced was a welcome surprise. But even more I was surprised and heartened by the ingenious plotting and the evocative feeling for words and how they are put together by a really talented writer. Other reviewers have talked about the plot and the characters. I second what those who praised them have said. I was a little uneasy by the magic realism (or skeptical religiosity, if you prefer) but still found it alluring. This writer knows how to weave a tale and he also knows how to leave you in suspense so that, given that the chapters alternate between present and twenty-years-past, you keep leap-frogging from one wished-for resolution to another.

I hope this writer is working on another novel. I'll be on the lookout for it, for sure.

I really enjoyed this book by Christopher Fisher. Especially for being the first book he's authored, I was very impressed by the story line and content. Once I started reading it, I finished it within days. I was a little puzzled by the author's stance or view on the Christian faith, and what exactly the message he was trying to communicate about it/the protagonist's/or his own personal beliefs, and for this reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Given the unclear message about faith, in addition to the somewhat crude (though apropos) use of language, I did not give 5 stars.

However, this book is certainly worth a read, and I would recommend you do just that.
I bought this/or got it free, last year. I just got around to reading it, and after the first chapter, had to come back online to see why I ever got it in the first place. I think I may have been thrown off by all of the amazing, 5 star reviews. Maybe a lot of people enjoy reading about the angst of a middle aged man who totally does not have it together, along with the rest of his dysfunctional family. I found his story confusing, pointless, and dull. The strongest feeling I had for him was regret that he couldn't find a good doctor. The whoopee description he gives of his fantastic wife, who can cook a Thanksgiving dinner, while holding on to twin babies, was unrealistic and irritating. Only a man would find that possible...or desirable...and only a total dork would let/make her do that. In my opinion though, dork fits him just fine. I just can't imagine why I would continue reading about this pathetic person. In fact, I'm not. I love books, but refuse to read just for the sake of reading something. I found nothing of what the 5 star reviewers saw in this story. In fact, I'm wondering if we even read the same book...
I got this book when it the kindle version was free one day. Those types of books are usually poorly written and I don't even finish many of them. This book grabbed me from the very beginning and took me for a ride as Paul figures out where he is in life and where hes' going as he works his way through past issues and current issues. Christopher Fisher is a great writer and I look forward to seeing more of his work. He brings Paul to life as a real human being with questions and flaws, but there is still a redemptive quality in him that makes you still hope for him as he deals with his life. This book has a religious theme and I love how he winds that into the story without hitting you over the head with the fact that he does or does not believe. I'm sad this is this author's first book as I would love to go find something else he has written. Big publishing houses, here is an author worth finding.
