Every once in a while, a writer comes along and breaks all the rules, transforming the genre, propelling it in new and innovative directions. In the field of horror, a few names come to mind immediately; the early works of Stephen King, the lyrical almost erotic horror served up by Clive Barker's Books of Blood series and Anne Ryce's sensual appropriation of the vampire genre. More often than not, however, each transformation, each paradigm shift, leaves the devoted horror fan feeling a little bereft, and with good reason. Each boundary that is transgressed, each new leap into unknown directions, takes us further and further away from the source from which all things spring the ghost story, the sinister tale, whispered in the dark around a dying fire.
