Superman Unchained 2013 #2 eBook Scott Snyder Jim Lee Dustin Nguyen
Superman Unchained (so far) reminds us of what Superman has become as a ' God Among us '. Lee's powerful art remains bold and fresh. It delivers strength and confidence in every panel. Superman isn't Clark Kent, spilling coffee on his shoes, he explodes through an orbiting satellite leaving destruction on the first few pages with us, the reader wondering if he has finally flipped. His internal dialogue becomes a distraction to the artwork. Even when he is unsure of his actions, he expresses this with strength and confidence. The story so far is entwined with characters and motives as complex as it gets. Two issues in, and I can't wait to see where I am being led.If I have a complaint, it's the dialogue; Word balloons are everywhere. Even Lois, ever the multitasker, is pushing virtual windows about the air to design the Daily Planet issue in a frenzy while talking to Clark and fending herself off from Perry White. She looks fabulous doing it in heels and short skirt. We don't want to cover the artwork with pesky word balloons and so they are everywhere. Everything is cramped. For $3.99 an issue, they can add a couple pages and drop the filler story on the back end.
As I get older, I don't want the Silver-Age Superman, the mighty man plagued with doubt. Often what I get with the new 52 is Powerful superheroes who throw-down with each other within a minute of meeting. They explode through a wall instead of opening the door and walking into a room. It makes for great covers but as a story it is far fetched and playing down to the lowest audience level.
This is only a second issue but it shows promise. Superman is less than mighty in the other titles with his name since the revamp. This offers Superman a return to god-like status he has earned.
