When Sara Diamond's publisher drops the moderately successful series that she's written she's forced to downsize if she wants to continue writing full-time. She moves into an apartment in a slightly shabby building in San Francisco, but there's nothing at all shabby about her new neighbor, a very good looking young man named Ryan. Ryan and Sara strike up a friendship, each doing their best to ignore the frisson of attraction that ignites between them. Sara is plagued by insecurity: Is she too old for Ryan? Not attractive enough? And while Ryan has told Sara that he's a model, he is in fact an upscale prostitute who services female clients. He can't enter into a relationship with Sara without telling her the truth, but what will she think of him when she finds out?

Wow - so refreshing to read a straight-up contemporary romance with an edgier feel and characters that don't fall into the "Barbie & Ken" category. Ryan's story - how he evolved from a street kid turning tricks for food money into a polished "escort" - felt realistic. The way he detaches himself from his professional persona, how he differentiates between making love and performing his "job"...his character was well thought out. I felt like I had a real understanding of where he was in his life when he met Sara, and how he felt trapped in his lifestyle.

Now Sara's character was less complex, but still for the most part relatable. She's in her mid-thirties, her career is uncertain and she has these niggling doubts about her own attractiveness, at least where it concerns Ryan. Where I felt the story stumbled a bit was how Sara reacted to Ryan's "secret" and how she decides to go about getting him to give up "the life". I don't want to post any spoilers, but there is one scene where she threatens to do something so patently ridiculous and out of character that I almost laughed out loud.

Great characterization, a compelling plot, good dialog - this was sooo close to being a 5 star read for me, then it took a detour and became an issue laden romance. Coming out, the exploitation of runaway teens - you name it and it got thrown into the mix and then all resolved in a far too pat, too gooey sweet manner. Still, this was by far one of the better romances I've read recently and I would highly recommend it.

Strong sexual language and content.

**There are Spoilers**

I left this book wondering if this couple - Sarah and Ryan would be together and not because the author left you with a cliff hanger or unanswered questions but because Sarah had so much inner dialogue on why she could not get over his occupation that I cannot put this book down without thinking that she will never really get over his life before her.

I know the author wanted to make Sarah's feelings on Ryan's occupation seem real and I got that, but it became old when Sarah kept sending mixed signals - " I want you, oh but I can't get over that your an escort" this went on pretty much the whole middle of the book and all I kept thinking is "stop touching him and giving him sexual signals, stop hanging out with him, stop taking care of his animals, cut the cord lady and leave the poor guy alone"

Sarah came off as self serving to me, she never once tried to have empathy for why his life was the way it was (until near the end of the book when Ryan finally had a break down). She just wanted him to change over night for her "I know you have no real education Ryan, were abused by your drunk father, lived on the streets and raped, were taken in by a female "Pimp" who manipulated your love and fear, but I need you to change for me or we can't be together" her behavior made him loath himself even more because he had her on a pedestal.

Not a total loss because Ryan's character was well fleshed out and the secondary characters were good (Sarah's dad was a hoot) and Ryan's animals added some funny moments.
Fallen From Grace - Laura Leone

I LOVED this. Loved the opening premise, the characters and the whole setup. At barely 27% I emailed a friend to say, `you have to read this' and I gobbled it up, unable to put it down apart from when I had to sleep.

Ryan is a handsome, cultured and polite young man living alone, apart from a number of rescued pets that he lavishes affection on. He doesn't appear to have any female entanglements, and his new next door neighbour Sara even begins to wonder if he might be gay. She's a writer who's just been dumped by her publishing house and had to downsize. They become friends - close friends - and Sara draws the reluctant conclusion that Ryan is just not interested in her. After all, she's nearly ten years older and can't possibly be attractive to him.

Although Ryan claims to be a male model, the reality is harsh. He's a high class prostitute and has been since his pimp (Catherine) rescued him from the streets some ten years ago. She groomed him, taught him everything he knows and even while he hates his lifestyle, he feels nothing but gratitude towards her.

As Ryan and Sara draw closer and the boundary between friends and almost-lovers becomes blurred, Ryan has to tell her the truth. He can't bear the thought of sleeping with her, without her knowing. She is hurt and angered by his lies, but comes to terms with just staying friends, but it's not enough for Ryan. For the first time in his adult life, he's falling in love and desperately wants a different life - one with Sara.

This novel takes you through a cascade of emotions. Gritty and sordid in parts, Ryan's working life is not glamorised, but serves as a counterpoint to his quieter - happier - times with Sara. My stomach churned for him several times, and I longed for them to find their happy ending.
